As we age one of the natural processes that occurs becomes the stiffening of the lens. Nothing truly has occurred as far as disease. The body has a natural progression determined by genetics, and the eyes vision becomes slightly blurred around the 40s to 50s. It takes a moment to see with clarity the way we did in the 20s and the 30s. Eventually the moment becomes two moments and slows down the process of reading or viewing. Some people cope by buying reading glasses, but options exist such as Dr. Amjad Khokhar’s office of not wearing glasses and having a procedure done that restores the vision to what it nearly once was. The risk happens to be quite low. But like any surgery you need to be aware of options and risks.
RESTOR
RESTOR has been approved since around 2005. Made of a clear silicone, plastic or acrylic, the RESTOR artificial lens replaces an unhealthy lens during cataract surgery. Cataracts define as lens that have stiffened and clouded a bit making it slightly more difficult to see items up close or to read as efficiently. RESTOR lens replaces the natural lens and restores the vision to what it previous was. Classified as premium lens a good surgeon becomes a necessity with these to ensure an optimum outcome. Called accommodative, the lens adjusts to differing distances quickly. Multifocal means having more than one focal length. Sugarland Eye and Laser Center in Houston has a trained staff that can counsel on all the options, and if it may be the best option for the condition the patient has. Also the doctors do a consultation on any laser eye surgery or LASIK procedure, so a patient understands fully what the risks are and what the most likely outcome will be for their particular condition.
More Than Cataracts Can RESTOR help?
In a 2012 article in Review of Ophthalmology, a series of lens were compared. One of which was the RESTOR Multifocal Toric. Surgeons were looking for a single solution for presbyopia and astigmatism patients. Before these types of lens, a patient had to choose between one or the other for improving their eyesight. With RESTOR lens, both conditions can become corrected in a single operation. The latest models have a single piece design with UV and blue light filters built-in especially in the AcrySof IQ RESTOR brand. Two types of RESTOR happen: regular RESTOR works well below 0.75 D in astigmatism. If more than 0.75 D exist, then toric RESTOR becomes a better option in most patients. This covers 89 percent of the patients. Stability of the postop makes it a good surgery for years later, and this particular artificial lens does not rotate much. Patient interviews in other studies show that complications are rare except when a tear occurs in the anterior capsule of an eye. The procedure can be used on the elderly with no problems where maintaining vision improves quality of life. A study in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science showed with RESTOR the higher the amount on the cylinder the more effective the lens is.
Conclusion
Talk to the experts. The details of your eyes needs an expert who can determine the best options. Take your time in deciding. Good vision makes for a high quality of life.
Sugarland Eye & Laser Center leads in providing premium LASIK technologies to Houston, Sugar Land, and the surrounding region. The center’s award-winning medical director introduced revolutionary technologies such as iLASIK to the region. This technology is used by NASA astronauts, Navy SEALS and Air Force fighter pilots.
