Nearly all the people that undergo LASIK procedures report an instant improvement in their vision soon after their surgery. As per a worldwide study conducted by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery that was published in 2008, it was revealed that as high as 95% of the 16 million people who had taken the LASIK surgery route to improve their vision were pleased with the results.
The phenomenal success rate of this procedure makes it popular amongst people that need vision correction and results in a life changing decisions for them. However, as an experienced eye doctor will disclose to their patients that a fair chance exists that they may not attain vision clarity after just one treatment. Since all cases represent unique challenges, the outcomes differ from one person to another. In some cases an additional surgery may be required known as LASIK enhancement to increase the possibility of giving your eyes sharpness in vision.
When do I need an enhancement surgery?
After you have successfully undergone LASIK treatment, you have to get your vision evaluated. Most patients see better soon after their surgery, however, it is not unusual for vision to oscillate for the next few weeks. You need to check with your eye doctor as they will give you follow up care after the procedure. A good medical institute like Sugarland Eye & Laser Center in Houston will ensure proper post-operative care after your treatment.
However, if you feel any discomfort after the procedure in your daily activities then you must seek assistance from your doctor immediately. If you notice that even after a couple of months your vision becomes blurry with no signs of improvement then you would need an enhancement surgery. Your eye doctor will reevaluate your corneas and see if you are a good candidate for an additional surgery. You should also have enough thickness in your cornea to undergo a second procedure which will also be determined by your doctor.
What is the difference between enhancement surgery and original surgery?
The enhancement procedure is quite similar to the original surgery except in one aspect. In the enhancement process, the surgeon will not create a corneal flap using the laser, but will use a specialized tool to lift the flap that was created by the original surgery. It takes all of one of two minutes to lift the flap and is a painless process. With minimal reshaping of the cornea, your vision should be able to improve by the second process.
Is the second procedure costly?
If you are getting an enhancement within one year of LASIK surgery then your surgeon may not charge you any fee. However, this differs from one doctor to another. You can check with your LASIK surgeon while doing your research and learn about their fees and policies. Also get detailed information about post-operative care that is offered after LASIK enhancement has been performed.
