Some eye problems may require treatment with LASIK laser eye surgery from a premier eye clinic such as Sugarland Eye & Laser Center in Houston, but there are some eye problems that can initially be treated at home.
Black eye – There are more serious symptoms associated with this condition that would require a patient to consult an eye doctor such as blurred vision, bleeding of the eyes, inability to move the eye, etc. Otherwise, general pain and swelling can be treated by application of an ice pack for 20 minutes at a time, once an hour.
Pink eye – Also called conjunctivitis, pink eye is caused by a virus and commonly patients cannot get rid of the symptoms with antibiotics. Although viral conjunctivitis cannot be cured at home, symptoms can be relieved before seeing an eye doctor. The affect eye can be treated and relieved of pain by applying a cool compress and then take a visit to see a doctor.
There could be cases where conjunctivitis is caused by a bacterial infection. Apart from taking a treatment plan from an eye doctor at Sugarland Eye & Laser Center in Houston, the patient has to use antibiotic eye drops regularly. The patient has to take special care not to pass on this condition to anyone else, given that conjunctivitis is contagious. Therefore, no towels, handkerchiefs, cosmetics, etc. should be shared during a contagious period.
Eye allergies – Eye allergies are as common as nasal allergies. Due to eye allergies, the eyes become red, teary and itchy. The patient is required to limit their exposure to the source of pollen. They may need to shift their location to a cleaner and allergen-free environment. The source of allergens could be pets, mold or pollen. The patient must avoid using window fans because these mechanical devices circulate pollen even more or could draw pollen from the outside.
Individuals with eye allergies should wear sunglasses when they go outside. If dust is the source of an allergy, covers for your bed should be uses to reduce allergens as well. To temporarily wash allergens from the surface of the eyes, artificial tears can be used. There are anti-allergy eye drops that can be used to lower the symptoms associated with eye allergies.
Sty – This eye condition does not look great on a person’s face and could look intimidating as well, but a sty is a harmless eye condition that usually goes away with time. A simple technique of applying a warm washcloth over the eyes will relieve symptoms. The process can be repeated three to four times a day. The objective is to open the pores in the eyelash area and unblock them. During this time, contact lenses should not be worn nor eye makeup applied. The patient should never try to squeeze the sty out. If done, the infection only aggravates by spreading across the eye.
Conclusion
Once symptoms are initially alleviated at home, check with an eye doctor to for a consultation immediately.
