Many people shy away from LASIK treatment due to some unfounded fears and do not take the necessary steps until they are cornered by their contact lenses or glasses. Some of the most common fears associated with laser eye surgery are:
Apprehension #1: What if I have to stay awake during the procedure?
Just like any other medical procedure, LASIK also involves the use of eye numbing drops and a mild sedative that can take the edge off. However, there is a fair chance that you might feel a little discomfort and blurry vision, which happens only during the surgery, but you can easily over this fear if you have a trusted surgeon to deal with your issue.
Apprehension #2: What if I accidentally blink?
Doctors are aware of this possibility that in absence of proper equipment, the patient is likely to blink their eyes in the middle of a procedure, as a reflex reaction. However, do not worry. There are specially designed instruments which keep your eyes open. There is also a computer laser that monitors your eye movement over 4,000 times per second to ensure accuracy of the laser. If you can hold you vision still for at least 45 seconds, you will be done with the procedure, even before you know it!
Apprehension #3: What if I cannot afford the treatment cost?
This is perhaps the most common fear faced by all people suffering from an eye condition that keeps them from getting a treatment. At the face of it, the cost may see exorbitant. However, what you must realize is that your surgery cost does not include the advanced consultation and personalized sessions to help you through the recovery process. You can check with your insurance care provider to find out if they cover a portion of the LASIK treatment or if there are any on-going discounts available with your eye specialist. All the patients that have undergone the treatment agree that it pays for itself in a matter of years due to saved costs on glasses and contact lenses.
Apprehension #4: What if I lose my vision entirely due to complications?
This is the most unnerving fear of all. If you are worried about complications and slips during the surgery, you can easily ease those by using the services of a reputable eye care center like Sugarland Eye & Laser Center in Houston. They have been in business long enough to have a long trail of satisfied customer who swear by their efficiency. However, if you are still feeling unconfident about going through the procedure, you always the choice to opt out.
Nearly all people who have undergone the LASIK treatment would agree that their fears regarding the procedure have been unwarranted. To have a laser eye surgery should not disturb you if you have an experienced surgeon at the other end of the laser.
