For many golfers, golf is more than just a sport. It is a special love affair that matures and ages gracefully with time. That is until you start having problems with your vision. Soon you find that the once stunning backdrop of your favorite golf courses has lost their appeal. Then eventually you suddenly feel that your game is not like it used to be. It is time to accept that your vision is no longer as clear as when you started playing the sport several years, if not decades, ago. For many golfers, there are three options, wear eyeglasses, wear contact lenses or have LASIK.
Should you wear eyeglasses?
There are golfers who wear eyeglasses and have no problem with them. However, for the majority of golfers who have vision problems, wearing glasses is simply not an option. For one, to be able to really focus on the ball at the right angle, you need the glasses to be slip-proof. However, some golfers still have problems with slip-proof glasses. They still need to focus with glasses, which affects their swing. Then there is the problem with bifocals. They can really mess up your sight on the ball and affect your game. The fact is there are people who can play golf wearing glasses, but for many golfers, the inconvenience and discomfort of glasses make it less than ideal on the golf course.
How about contact lenses?
For many golfers, contact lenses are better than wearing glasses. The peripheral vision offered by contact lenses is enough for many golfers to switch from glasses to contacts. For golfers who have bifocals, the contact lenses do not mess with their sight. However, there are those who just could not get comfortable with their contact lenses. The scratchiness takes away from their enjoyment of the sport. Contact lenses may be better than glasses, but it really depends on the individual.
What about LASIK? Can it really improve your golf game?
Many golfers have had laser eye surgery or LASIK. Among the PGA Tour golfers who have had the procedure, we have Jonathan Byrd, Steve Marino, Mike Weir and Tom Pernice. Among the LPGA Tour golfers who have had the procedure, we have Nadine Ashe, Michelle Bell, Patty Jordan, Akiko Fukoshima, Sally Dee and Donna Wilkins. The good thing about the procedure is that it does not have the inconvenience and discomfort of glasses and contact lenses. Moreover, it offers better vision compared to glasses and contact lenses.
Golf is a sport requires good eyesight and focus. You need clear vision in every swing. This makes glasses and contact lenses unsuitable for the sport, but when it comes to how much it can improve your game, it all comes down to your putting. You will have an improved and complete dimension that you can have a better control of where you want your ball to roll across the green.
