A Guide for Selecting Eyeglasses, Lenses, and Frames

“Nerdy is the new cool,” famous actress Kristen Bell once said, and many people agree. People across the country are embracing the librarian look. With nerds like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates achieving celebrity-like status, it’s now stylish to wear eyeglasses. Even celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Megan Fox, and supermodel Adriana Lima have been photographed wearing them.

You’ll find many stylish and fashionable prescription glasses, from brands including Calvin Klein and Mango. The wide array of choices can be confusing. You will find that there are more options to consider than just your prescription or frame shape. Here’s a quick guide on how to select eyeglasses.

How to Choose Lens Material

Plastic is the most affordable material. They are easy to tint and actually do not break easily. However, they tend to scratch easily. High need prescriptions are also thick and heavy.

The impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses are a good option for people who often engage in sports, for children, or for people who work in an environment that exposes them to risk for broken glasses. They also provide UV protection.

Aspheric lenses have a more attractive, slimmer profile than conventional glasses. However, aspheric lenses cost several times more than conventional lenses.

Trivex lenses are lightweight and impact-resistant. They also provide better optical quality than polycarbonate. They are expensive, however, and are not always available in some Houston optical stores.

Glass lenses provide excellent vision correction and are scratch-resistant. However, they are thick, heavy, and tend to break easily.

Add-on Options

To maximize the visual powers and aesthetic looks of your glasses, you may consider adding a few more features, such as:

1. Anti-reflective coating – Do you spend lots of hours in front of your computer? If you’re experiencing eye strain as a result, consider adding anti-reflective coating to reduce the glare from computer screens.

2. Scratch resistance coating – Preserve the looks of your plastic lenses by providing a glass-like layer of protection.

3. UV coating – If you have chosen plastic, Trivex, or aspheric lenses, but want additional protection from harmful sun rays every time you step outside, add a UV coating.

4. Tints – Tints do not only add color and style to your eyewear, but also extra protection from UV radiation.

How to Choose Glasses Frames

Shape – Choose eyewear frames that flatter your face. Think contrast. If you have a round or oval face, for instance, square frames will look good on you.

Color – Color that either matches or contrasts the color of your eyes and hair are a good option. Thick, dark frames tend to draw attention to your eyes and away from features you don’t like.

When to Get an Eye Exam

Dr. Amjad Khokhar of Houston LASIK & Eye in Texas recommends that you have a comprehensive eye exam every two years because our prescription tends to change over time. An eye exam can also reveal underlying medical issues such as glaucoma, HIV, diabetes, and heart disease. If you find wearing eyeglasses rather inconvenient, LASIK is a groundbreaking vision correction procedure. Talk to your eye doctor about this type of laser eye surgery.
