Facts about the eyes

The eye defines as one of the most complicated pieces of human anatomy. Eye doctors deal with facts when examining patient eyes or doing laser eye surgery. An asymmetrical sphere set within our skull full of fluid attached to the brain by the optic nerve has fascinated scientists for a century. The eye has intriguing parts. A colored iris that gives everyone a unique stare. A clear cornea creates a window into our inner body. The circular black pupils let light hit inside the body enveloped in a white sclera surrounded by the iris. Another layer of tissue called the conjunctiva that helps protect it all. Here are some astonishing facts about the eyes:

  1. By the third week in the womb, the eyes develop from a neural tube, and yet newborns only see 8 to 15 inches away in black, white and gray for several weeks. At about four months color vision develops and sight changes.
  2. Corneas of the eyes hold no blood and do not contain blood vessels. The tears and aqueous humor give the cornea nutrients.
  3. Human eyes can distinguish nearly 3 million colors and around 500 shades of gray.
  4. Most of our memories involve a visual which came from the eyes.
  5. Human eyes have a blind spot from where the optic nerve passes through the retina. Many times people do not become aware of it because the brain fills in with information to hide the factA person can determine their blind spot by a test.
  6. Visual information about the world sent by the eye through the optic nerve arrives upside and backward. The brain sends back the information reoriented, and since a person has two eyes, it has two pictures of the world it blends to create one image.
  7. A normal eye has two types of vision: straight forward and peripheral. Peripheral vision detects motion quickly while the other straight forward vision scans the environment.
  8. The iris of the eye has 256 unique characteristics making it ideal for security checkpoints.
  9. A blink of an eye occurs about every 2/5 second making about 10,000 blinks in 24 hours.
  10. Eyes scan the environment continuously, and the eyes move in milliseconds to prevent from seeing blurred images while moving the body.
  11. MIT neuroscientists determined that the human brain processes images from the eye in 13 milliseconds adding evidence that vision finds concepts first then fills in details due to the rapid processing speed.
  12. Eye muscles rank as the most active muscle in the body.
