Did you know that turkeys have some of the best vision in the animal kingdom? It’s true. If you live on a farm and have one or several turkeys then you know just how fast they react to movements. Although they are social animals, they are easily spooked. That is because they can see even the slightest movement even up to 100 yards away. This is why one of the rules when hunting turkey is never to approach one from 100 yards away because they turkey will show you a disappearing act before you can even aim your gun.
Turkey Vision
The key to turkeys’ vision is the complexity of their eyes. Their retinas alone have seven photoreceptors. One of these receptors is a rode cell while the rest are cone cells. The rod cell allows them to see light in an instant while the rod cells see colors. Now, compared to humans, we only have one rod cell and three cone cells. You might be wondering what those additional cells are for. For one, if you hunt a turkey, do not wear clothes that have been washing with a whitening detergent. That detergent has a UV residue and turkey eyes are UV sensitive because of their additional cells.
Aside from the additional cells, we all know that they have great peripheral vision because of the position of their eyes. Just like other birds, reptiles and fish, the eyes of the turkey reside on the sides of its head. This practically gives them 270 degrees of vision. As if that is not enough, they can actually turn their heads up to almost 360 degrees. Together, this gives them 360 degrees of vision. What they do not have is 3D vision, which we humans do have. However, they have the ability to crane their heads forward and backward and bob it up and down. This gives them a sense of height, depth and distance of an object. So in a way, they have their own kind of 3D vision.
Improving Vision
We humans definitely do not have turkey’s super vision. However, it is possible for us to improve our vision. One of the things to do is to have regular eye checkups. The eye specialist will check your vision and determine if you need eye correction treatment. Your specialist will also see if you suffer from eye problems, such as age-related issues. Be cautious with natural vision correction, such as eye exercise, massage, looking at objects and other holistic natural remedies. A doctor has to be extremely knowledgeable to know when to apply these kinds of methods. Often these types of treatments become prescribed for specific reading problems involving tracking not eyesight. The American Optometric Association and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) have conducted studies on them and found that reports of vision improvements are often placebo effects. When the subjects were tested, their vision was the same as before the natural treatments though tracking text or certain acuity skills improved.
