Each May, Healthy Vision Month is conducted by the National Eye Institute. This initiative is to empower people into understanding the importance of protecting their eyes. A range of treatments and check-ups are prescribed during the course of this event. Citizens are encouraged to take up these check-ups so that potential conditions can be halted such as vision loss or eye diseases. Additionally, dilated eye scans detect oncoming eye diseases. Therefore, it is an ideal time for you and your family members to enjoy the benefits of early intervention by taking the services of the National Eye Institute.
Is this only about the National Eye Institute?
Several other organizations join the cause too. For instance, the Glaucoma Research Foundation joins the National Eye Institute in promoting this cause. Given that glaucoma shows no early symptoms, this foundation collaborates during the Healthy Vision Month to identify potential glaucoma patients and conduct early intervention.
There are organizations that have their own version of Healthy Vision Month. For instance, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has an Eye Care America program. This program provides free eye exams. Even top eye clinics might have Healthy Vision Month initiatives. Ensure you check with eye clinics such as Houston LASIK & Eye to check if they have any ongoing initiatives during the month of May.
How frequently should the eye be tested?
As with any organ in the body, even the eyes weaken with age. It is a universal fact. Before age 40, get your eyes tested every 2 to 4 years. After 40 and before 54, the frequency should be every year. After 54, the eyes should be examined every six months at a qualified LASIK clinic such as Houston LASIK & Eye in Houston. This center, apart from providing excellent laser eye surgery, specializes in numerous eye treatments.
What is a dilated eye exam?
Many people are in the illusion that their eyes are in good condition, but only an eye examination reveals inherent problems that may not be apparent now, but waiting to come to the fore. During this eye examination, drops are placed into the eyes. Drops dilate the pupil and widen it. It allows the eye physician to view the condition of the eyes better with a magnifying lens. The retina is examined carefully and signs of damage or related problems are identified.
Eye safety is a universal prerequisite
A study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reveals that almost one percent of workers had eye injuries from not wearing eye protection or wearing the wrong type of eye equipment or not taking adequate eye safety measures. Protecting the eye of a worker or an employee is no the responsibility of the employee alone. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards mandate that even employers have to be cognizant of the fact. They must do the needful to ensure workers and employees are given adequate eye protection.
