Clinics like the Houston Lasik Clinic look for ways to improve surgical techniques and processes. Evaluations of new products become part of that process as studies from other ophthalmologists and institutions report their findings in journals.
About 2016 Alcon released a quadrifocal intraocular lens that functioned as a trifocal one named PanOptix. Described as innovative diffractive lens design, ophthalmologists began to explore if it could help patients with cataracts.
Cataracts
In the past decade, about 24.4 million people in the USA had cataracts. Projections have gone as high as 50 million people by 2050.
The most common cause of cataracts lists as aging. The eye undergoes changes as the birthdays pile up.
The natural lens of the eye begins to get cloudy. Depending on the person, it may take years before a vision issue appears from it.
Cataracts caused by age have a gradual process of development where a person adapts. Other causes such as eye injury, diabetes, or overexposure to the sun, bring on a more rapid version of cataracts.
Signs a person may have cataracts
A person may notice the vision blurring. A single person may appear as twins.
Light begins to bother the eyes more. Or colors begin to look like old pictures faded and yellowed.
It takes more and more energy to do activities that take vision. The rest of the eye, nerves, and brain processing may be functioning near one hundred percent, but because it all begins with the lens, the information becomes presented in a cloud at the beginning.
Back to PanOptix
In 2016 in Spain the Corneal and Lens Surgery Department at the Instituto Oftalmologica Fernandez Vega did a 6-month study on 90 eyes. PanOptix IOL implantation lens went into each of the 90 eyes.
Patients were chosen carefully for the laser eye surgery as in no ocular disease pathology other than a cloudy lens and no eyes with previous surgery. Femtosecond Laser procedures became the tool of choice for the operation.
The results gave satisfactory visual acuity (sharpness of vision), better distance visual acuity, plus sphere and cylinder correction. Few issues appeared such as halos and shadows in the patients.
The study set in motion the exploration for use in cataract surgeries with patients with more complicated conditions. For the last four years, more studies have gone on, and more data has accumulated just where PanOptix becomes most useful.
Of course, the manufacturer of the PanOptix lens has developed variations of the first quadrifocal intraocular lens to adapt to other conditions of the eye. In most cases, vision improved from its pre-operative stance.
Exploring the Option
Laser eye surgery can make a vast improvement in the quality of life. Having several options lets a patient and doctor tailor the product and treatment to their needs and specific lifestyle.
PanOptix offers a chance to have a range to concentrate eyesight much more like normal sight. It all begins with a conversation with the people at the clinic.
Gathering history and data brings to light the choice that works well for that case. Please drop by and visit the Lasik clinic today and pick up some information about it.
Houston Lasik leads in providing premium LASIK technologies to Houston, Sugar Land, and the surrounding region.
